Hi! Im Melody! I'm on from 9am -3pm here on KOZZ! Join me for Lunch sometime!

computers+me= ugh! helping our troops+me= happy girl!

Let’s try this again…just wrote this entire thing, pushed ‘publish’ & it disappeared.  It’s like in college when I didn’t backup my term paper & it was due the next morning & I hit the wrong damn button… I severely dislike technology right now.  Where’s my nerd tech king, Sidler when I need him?
* sigh *

But I digress….

~ Soldiers are dreamers; when the guns begin they think of firelit homes, clean beds, and wives ~  Siegfried Sassoon

I have no idea who that is, but well said!!  I believe our troops deserve more than just one day of recognition.  So, I found a bunch of military-related charities that are always in need.  & some just need your expertise, your time, some old paperback books or your unused frequent flier miles – soooooo painless!!!  I did all the research for you, there’s something for everybody & here’s a quick overview of each…

ourmilitarykids.org – deployment is tough on everybody, especially the kids left behind – grades slip, morale drops.  The reduction of pay from civilian to military can make families cut things like tutoring, summer camp, arts & sports activities.  These guys provide funding for all that.  They’ve given almost $9m to kids across the country.

supportmilitaryworkingdogs.org – soldiers come in all forms.  These dogs perform search & rescue missions & search for hidden explosives & roadside bombs.  They are often injured – heat stroke w/temps more than 130 degrees, eye infections from blowing sand, injured feet from melted asphalt, glass, shrapnel, etc.  these guys send over cooling vests, paw pads, goggles, ear protection (for helicopter rides), grooming tools, collapsible water bowls, toys & packages for handlers.

booksforsoldiers.com – during deployment, soldiers are faced with massive downtime and are often restricted to their base due to travel limitations.  Imagine the boredom!  mail-call days are one of the most anticipated events of deployment & books are like ‘care packages for the mind’!!

homesforourtroops.org – they provide specially adapted homes for our severely wounded service members all over the country at no cost to them.  They’re looking for $ but also need expertise, supplies & even land.

unmetneeds.com - deployments can be incredible financial and emotional hardships for soldiers and the families they leave behind.  These guys brought together three successful, longstanding programs: VFW Operation Uplink, VFW Unmet Needs, and the VFW Military Assistance Program (MAP).  They do a ton of different things like – give connections home for deployed troops and hospitalized veterans, give grants toward emergency financial aid to military families & sponsor a bunch of scholarships for military kids, etc.

fisherhouse.org donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers,  enabling family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.  there is no charge for any family to stay.  They also do a bunch of other things like – sponsor scholarships, flier miles, etc.

*** go to ‘about’ on their page, near the bottom go to ‘hero miles’ to donate your unused frequent flier miles.  Also there, go to ‘Newman’s Own Awards’ & it’ll take you to a large list of other military charities.

legion.org – these guys have been around since 1919 & are the nation’s largest veterans service organization.  They are ‘committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.’  They do a ton of stuff for kids & help w/nationwide reintegration assistance for wounded veterans.  They also do a lot of pushing for legislation to help military families.

there ya go!  have a stupendous weekend!!!
