Thursday 12/16 I had 2 of my favorite local musicians on my show here on KOZZ. Chuck Garric of the Alice Cooper Band, and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford of Creedence. Chuck grew up in South Lake Tahoe listening to KOZZ. He did 3 world tours with Ronnie James Dio, and wrote "Death By Love" on Dio's final studio cd "Master Of The Moon." Chuck has been in Alice Cooper for 9 years. I was at his first show in South Lake Tahoe with Alice. Chuck did all this while raising his Daughter Alicia, primarily as a single Dad, until he met his wife Lindsay. Chuck is a class act. Congrats to Alice Cooper for his induction to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame! Chuck appears on my new cd which will be out soon!
Doug "Cosmo" Clifford has been my friend for years, and KOZZ loves Creedence! Doug and his "Revisited" bandmates recorded a very cool version of "Run Rudolph, Run" for the "More Hope For The Holidays" CD (a benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) pick one up at Recycled Records, Discology (In the movie thater building in downtown Reno) and Davis Chiropractic on Moana, next to Bobo's. Dweezil Zappa has brought to the world what once was lost. The beautiful music and humor of his Father, Frank. I had Dweezil on my show, and the reclusive, somewhat shy guitarist opened up and shared his thoughts on touring, and bringing the show to a new audience. He also shared some guitar modifications his Father had done to his many Gibson SG's. At the show, I ran into my mentor, and the reason I got into radio, Bruce Van Dyke. Bruce and I caught the show opener "Gumbo Variations" from the upstairs balcony at Reno's Knitting Factory. Bruce turned to me and said "Wow, we're watching Frank's kid, and he's damn good!"
I wonder how many people have missed the chance meeting of a lifelong friend or soul mate because they were preoccupied with their phone? (either texting or talking).
I first met Harry Reid when he used to stop by KPLY, to do "Boxing" reports on the Bob Dee show. I was the P.D. of Z-Rock, and Harry would stop in, say hi, and ask me how I was doing (he knew I was a single Dad, and would kid around with my Son whenever he was there too). Over the years, we'd keep in touch and he would talk to me about bills, legislation, and one of his pet peeves was when an attachment to a good bill would negate the positives. He was always modest, and approachable.
I first met Sharron Angle when she knocked on my door. I was living in the North Valleys, and she was up for re-election. She was so brave and determined. She was all by herself, going door to door, to talk to people in person. She's not that tall, she wore jeans and a sweater, and looked like she was a neighbor. She looked me straight in the eye and asked if I had time to talk. She had a warm smile, and I thought she was cute. I explained I was a single Dad and was cooking dinner for my Son. She briefly explained what her concerns were, and asked for my vote, and said goodbye. I thought she was sweet.
These two people, are people, and no matter what the political machine churned them out to be, they're both for real, and they're ours.
